Marshfield Summer Events: Concerts, Festivals & Local Traditions

Marshfield runs on a calendar that Cape Cod visitors never hear about: bonfires on the beach the night before the Fourth, a hometown music festival that has grown into a national draw, ten days of county fair to close out August, and then — just when the crowds thin — a lobster festival and a flannel-clad fall music weekend. These are the dates locals plan around, and they are worth planning a week around too.

A note on timing: every event below is annual, and we describe when it typically happens rather than printing dates that go stale. Organizers confirm each year's schedule on their own sites — each event links to its organizer — so check there before you lock in travel. The season runs in two movements: high summer (July and August) and the fall shoulder (September and October), when the weather is still fine and the town gets its events back to itself. For the days between the dates, our Marshfield Local's Guide covers the beaches, restaurants, and trails that fill out an event week.

July 3rd on the Beach: Bonfires & Fireworks

On the South Shore, Independence Day starts a night early. Every July 3rd, bonfires and private fireworks displays go up and down Marshfield's beaches — Rexhame, Green Harbor, Fieldston, and Brant Rock — as neighbors and beach cottages pool their best shells and light up the sky after dark. There is no start time and no stage: the displays build organically from dusk, burst by burst, reflecting off the wet sand, and on a clear night you can watch them running up and down the coast in both directions. If you are staying in Rexhame, the beach is a five-minute walk, and your own stretch of sand is the best seat.

One clarification, because it matters: consumer fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts, and the July 3rd bonfires and fireworks are a long-standing informal neighborhood tradition — not an official town show and not a permitted public display. You are there to watch a local custom, not to join in. The tradition's epicenter sits about a 30-minute drive south at White Horse Beach in Plymouth's Manomet village, where July 3rd bonfires have been lit since the 19th century — by tradition, the fires burn until the rising tide puts them out — and where the town manages the night with police and fire crews on hand and bonfires by permit; get down to the sand before dusk to claim a watching spot. Prefer the big official show? Plymouth fires its municipal fireworks over the waterfront on July 4th.

When: July 3rd, from dusk. Where: Marshfield's beaches; White Horse Beach, Plymouth, for the epicenter. Suits: everyone — it is the most Marshfield night of the year.

Levitate Music & Arts Festival

The biggest weekend of the Marshfield summer. Levitate is a two-day music and arts festival at the Marshfield Fairgrounds, about 15 minutes from Rexhame, built by the local surf-shop crew behind the Levitate brand. National headliners top the bill, live art and an artisan marketplace fill the grounds between sets, and the whole town takes on a festival hum for the weekend. If your trip coincides, plan around it deliberately: go, and treat the beach as your recovery room — or pick a different week if crowds are not your thing.

Tickets are the one part of a Marshfield summer we tell guests to book without delay: tiers sell through as the lineup lands, and Saturday tickets sold out in 2026. Buy through the festival's own site, and buy early.

When: typically a weekend in July; check levitatemusicfestival.com for this year's dates and tickets. Where: Marshfield Fairgrounds, 140 Main St. Suits: music fans, groups of friends, and families with older kids.

Levitate Backyard: The Season-Long Version

Not an event so much as the summer's standing arrangement. Levitate Backyard, at 1871 Ocean Street about 10 minutes from the house, is Levitate's outdoor live-music venue and surf cantina: daily après-beach acoustic sets, ticketed shows through the season, and the Rexicana Surf Cantina serving tacos and margaritas on site. On any given week of a Marshfield stay, this is where an ordinary evening turns into a night out — walk in after the beach, see who is playing, stay for one more set than you planned.

The venue's season runs long — May through December, with seasonal openings and special events at the edges — so Backyard nights are on the table for spring and fall stays too, not just July and August. The daily acoustic sets are the drop-in option; headline shows are ticketed, so check the calendar before you count on one.

When: May through December; daily in season. Where: Levitate Backyard, 1871 Ocean St, Marshfield. Suits: everyone — the easiest evening plan in town.

Marshfield Fair

The classic end-of-summer ritual: a ten-day country fair at the Marshfield Fairgrounds every late August — carnival rides, 4-H shows and livestock, fair food in its full glory, and the demolition derby. The fair has been the town's August anchor for generations, and it changes the rhythm of a late-summer week in the best way: beach in the morning, fair at night, and at least one evening given over entirely to rides and fried dough. It is also genuinely a local institution rather than a tourist production — the 4-H barns and exhibition halls are the real thing.

When: typically ten days in late August; check marshfieldfair.org for this year's dates. Where: Marshfield Fairgrounds, 140 Main St. Suits: families first, but honestly everyone — go at least once.

When Summer Tips into Fall

September and October are the locals' favorite months on the South Shore: the water is still warm, the beaches empty out, and the calendar keeps two of its best weekends for the shoulder season. If you are choosing a fall week, choose it around one of these.

South Shore Lobsterfest

An annual September seafood festival at the Marshfield Fairgrounds, and exactly what it sounds like: a one-day celebration of the local catch, where every food vendor is required to put at least one lobster dish on the menu — expect lobster in forms from the classic roll to tacos, ravioli, and mac and cheese. Around the food there is a seaside marketplace, a beverage garden, a kids' zone, live entertainment, and coastal-education exhibits from the organizations that work these waters. It is the seafood event of the season, and the friendliest possible introduction to how seriously this coast takes lobster.

Tickets are sold in advance through the organizer's site, with a gate price on the day — buy ahead and skip the line.

When: typically a Saturday in September; tickets and this year's date at southshorelobsterfest.com. Where: Marshfield Fairgrounds, 140 Main St. Suits: seafood lovers and families.

Flannel Jam

Levitate's fall counterpart to the summer festival: a smaller, flannel-clad music weekend held over Columbus Day weekend at Levitate Backyard. The bill leans bluegrass, folk, and Americana, and the trimmings are pure New England fall — spiked cider, cider donuts, and food trucks. Where the July festival is the summer at full volume, Flannel Jam is the season turned down: cooler air, earlier dark, and music that suits both. It is the anchor event of an October stay and a fine excuse to come back after a summer trip.

When: typically Columbus Day weekend in October; check levitateflanneljam.com for this year's lineup and tickets. Where: Levitate Backyard, 1871 Ocean St, Marshfield. Suits: folk and Americana fans, fall-weekend travelers.

Planning a Trip Around Events

Two weekends tower over the calendar: Levitate Festival in July and the Marshfield Fair in late August. Both draw visitors from well beyond the South Shore, and lodging for those weeks is spoken for early — if either festival is the point of your trip, book your stay when you book your tickets, not after. The fall events are easier: Lobsterfest and Flannel Jam weekends are lively without being overrun, and a September or October week built around one of them pairs festival days with empty beaches and the year's best light.

One more planning note: event weeks reward a base you can walk from. Staying in Rexhame puts the July 3rd beach tradition five minutes from your door and the Backyard's nightly music a short drive away, so the logistics of a festival week — parking, late nights, early beach mornings — mostly take care of themselves.
